The best way to tell if a service dog is legitimate is to ask! The law allows persons with disabilities to be taken at their word. And also you can ask only 2 questions if it does not seem to be. One is not allowed to demand whether is animal is certified, trained or licensed.


It is important to understand that every disability is not apparent

One should understand that every disability is not visible. Disabilities like deafness, autism, epilepsy, psychiatric disabilities, allergies, and multiple sclerosis are some of them.  It is not very easy to determine this kind of disability and the extent of disability.

Is it illegal to require the documentation of a service dog?

You would have seen that many individuals make their service dog appear with the dedicated service tags for pets or carry the documentation along with them. But there is no legal mandate for them to do so. The reason why you should not ask for the documentation is that the person you meet may think not to disclose his/her disability.

So it is an intrusion into their privacy. It is okay if their dog does not wear a vest or any identification mark. If they wish to produce it to you, it is completely their choice then.

The law tells that there is no need for any identification. However, there are some advantages to having service dog tags. People will understand the symbols and won't annoy you. It can be easily rescued by the animal welfare organizations in the events of trouble.

Recognized certification of dogs

There is no universal certification of dogs. However, there is a wide variety of training techniques, styles, schools and even online courses to train the service dogs. This course will cover many important issues like focused help of the dog for a particular disability, use of service dog Identification tags, etc. Some trainers are not graduated in a dedicated course. But they have learned things pertinent over the years.
